  1. Last week I watched my professor drone on for seven hours about
  2. computer circuitry. As my eyes struggled to stay open as he babbled
  3. about SR-latches, I wondered: what sequence of dreadful mistakes did I
  4. make to land myself in this situation. I got through my entire college
  5. career without pulling a single all-nighter, yet that night changed it
  6. all.
  7. Although I could have followed along with the lecture material during
  8. the regular class time, remote learning made a tantalizing temptation
  9. to procrastinate and binge two and a half weeks of lecture material in
  10. one night --two nights before the exam. Ironically, I ended up doing
  11. remarkably well on that exam and felt prepared for every question;
  12. nerveless, it still begs the question... Why? After asking around, I
  13. found that all eight of my friends taking the class also binged the
  14. lecture videos before the exam.

  16. After two weeks of remote work, I started feeling something that I
  17. haven't felt in a very long time-- occasional boredom. This takes me
  18. back to grade school summers when I had nothing to do. Well, there is
  19. never "nothing to do." The problem really boils down to not being
  20. motivated to do anything.
  21. Working remotely is actually great for things that I am already
  22. motivated about because I can work on them uninterrupted for hours on
  23. end. I am getting more work done at my job as a research assistant,
  24. and I am putting more time into classes that I find interesting, like
  25. computer vision. However, dedicating time towards mundane tasks like
  26. learning about an esoteric computer architecture or writing essays for
  27. my professional communication class takes more effort than they used
  28. to.

  30. When we are isolated from others and don't have to physically go
  31. places, we have fewer motivators for actions. At
  32. college, my most productive times were either in the library or at my
  33. office. Physically not going into class every day, or not being able
  34. to physically work around other people removes some of the motivators
  35. that help us get stuff done. When I was at the library or my office, I
  36. got a ton of work done because I felt like I was obligated to get
  37. things done in this space. Or I was motivated by other people working
  38. to also get work done -- no matter how trivial the task.

  40. To get better at remote work, I have made some
  41. adjustments to my schedule:
  42. - Creating and updating physical lists
  43. - Changing environments every few hours
  44. - Maintaining a regular sleep schedule
  45. - Creating artificial rewards like watching youtube after I finish an essay
  46. - Reading before bed
  47. - Following an exercise routine
  48. Although this advice won't work for everyone, I suggest that you try
  49. some of these things if you are struggling at remote work. A lot of
  50. friends that I talk to are facing challenges when it comes to remote
  51. work and learning. It is different and will take some time for us to
  52. adjust to and get better at.

  54. I recently became very conscientious about my working space. In the
  55. past, I have decorated my office with pictures or thingamajigs.
  56. Recently I doubled down and did this a lot more for my current office.
  57. Making your work environment more personalized helps morale-- at least
  58. it has for me.
  59. Although it may be tempting, if you want to excel in remote work, now
  60. is not the time to get funky.
